What is a Traineeship?

A Traineeship is an education and training programme which includes work experience. This could help you gain  the skills and experience that employers are looking for.

Traineeships can last anywhere between 6 weeks and 6 months, and will be tailored to your individual needs. The programme is likely to include:

  • Preparation for work, including help writing a CVs and preparing for interviews;
  • Helping you improve your English and maths (if you need it);
  • Experiencing the world of work through a high quality work experience placement which will give you important experience and a valuable reference.

Who are they for?

Traineeships are aimed at:

  • Young people who are unemployed or work less than 16 hours a week and don't have much work experience;
  • Young people aged 16 – 18 who do not have a Level 3 qualificaton;
  • People aged 19 – 23 who do not have a level 2 qualificaton;
  • People aged up to 25 with a Learning Difficulty Assesment.

Will I be paid?

Traineeships are unpaid. However some colleges and employers pay a training allowance or may cover other costs such as travel or lunch during your work placement.  You might also qualify for financial support, including the 16-19 Bursary Fund.

What are the benefits of a Traineeship?

  • A Traineeship will put you in a better position to compete for an Apprenticeship or other job.
  • You will be able to build your CV and get vital experience with local and national employers.
  • You can get help to improve your English and maths skills which will boost your chances of getting a job, as well as improving your long term prospects and your earning potential.
  • Employers will be helping you get the skills you need to secure a job and succeed in employment.
  • You could get a job interview at the end of the work experience placement - if a role becomes available with the company. Even if one doesn't, you’ll get a reference and an exit interview.
